Chapter Twelve

Ivana walked Bruce back to the embassy, taking a casual stride, giving the team time to sanitize the conference room. When they walked in, everyone had already turned off the tech and closed up equipment crates. She closed the door behind them, as they were alone.

“So, no team introduction?” he asked and sat down.

“You were about to tell me how you pissed off the Firm,” she said as she took her seat at the head of the table.

“I asked too many questions. Probably the same thing you did to get saddled with Laurel and Hardy.”

“Everyone asks questions, Bruce.”

“Not everyone asks questions and gets answers that make them walk away from an operation.”

Ivana leaned back a bit as she heard that. “You walked away from an op?”

Bruce nodded. “It was filthy. I filed an official objection. Word is, Jimmy and Danny went out and finished it. Should have known that would happen, but I didn’t want it on my conscience.”

“What was it?”

He shook his head. “It doesn’t matter anymore, but it wasn’t for the empress or the people.”

“Whitestone,” she said, the name coming out like a curse.

“Yep.”

Ivana pinched the bridge of her nose and shook her head. It didn’t surprise her at all. She’d already deduced what had happened in vague terms based on the information she’d gotten from her own sources. The question now was what to do next.

They sat in silence for several minutes until he looked her in the eye and spoke. “I know you record everything. I want to see it.”

She shook her head without considering his request because she’d already considered it the moment she sat down with him. It surprised her that he’d waited this long. “No. Absolutely not.”

“I’ll get it eventually.”

“Not from me,” she said, then added, “or anyone else on my team.”

Bruce shot out of his chair, sending it flying back against the wall, and slammed his open palms on the table loud enough to make Ivana flinch. “You owe me that at least.”

Ivana hadn’t expected that. A part of the intake process was making sure Imperial Security agents were able to control their temper in any situation, but she supposed this was beyond the expectations of those who’d created the training program. She looked into his eyes and saw pain, anguish, and rage, but none of it was directed at her. This was a man who knew who to hate. Not the person who pulled the trigger.

No, he’s angry at the one who made his sister a target.

She said nothing but flipped up the tablet that had been face down on the table in front of her. It took her a moment to pull up the file and then cue it up. She started it from the moment she opened the door to Kevin O’Boyle’s bedroom and nodded toward the screen on the wall. “Okay.”

He watched, and Ivana forced herself to watch it with him. She didn’t often look back at footage of her jobs, other than selected sequences for more intelligence, or to review a way to do things better or cleaner.
